If you are new to the plant-based lifestyle, here is a list of my favorite resources: texts, cookbooks and films, and why I like each one of them.

Whole Foods, Plant-Based Books

The China Study by T. Colin Campbell, PhD and Thomas M. Campbell II, MD. One of the classics on what makes the whole food, plant-based diet so powerful, as well as the links between animal protein and disease. Results from the actual China Study make up a small part of the book, while the links between the Standard American Diet and chronic diseases are covered thoroughly. Written for the general public, this text is very accessible.

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure by Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr. This book makes it clear that people who are thought to be “at death’s door” can stall and even reverse heart disease through the whole food, plant-based diet. The recipes in the second half of the book show you how to rethink your diet meal by meal.

Forks Over Knives: The Plant-Based Way to Health by Gene Stone, T. Colin Campbell, PhD, et al.

Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes Without Drugs by Neal Barnard, MD

How Not to Die: Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease by Michael Greger, M.D. and Gene Stone
